  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- A really bad addition to this series : This series has been entertaining so far but this book, Murder at the Royal Botanic Gardens, is not. The plot devise that had me exclaiming most loudly is about a formerly intelligent and useful character that suddenly has turned absurd. He decides that having made an error in judgement resulting in our hero and heroine being involved in a murder investigation (although how any of this was his fault beggars imagining) he will rectify it by involving the youngest child in dangerous escapades without telling his boss or the boys guardian. This is not the only failure in this book which is bogged down by references to previous storylines. Our main characters have been reduced to two dimensional caricatures of themselves. Her political leanings are given scant attention, his notorious reputation is only mentioned in passing and we are left with a convoluted storyline that only unfolds in the last quarter of the book. • 2.0 out of 5 stars from COH -- Not up to previous standards : I was disappointed in this last outing, mainly because it was written as if it were something to be gotten through rather than an authentic story. Let's get them to the wedding, but we have to give the readers a story. The dialogue was stilted, characters were out of sync, and excuses abounded about why Charlotte was so uneasy. Wrexford was a caricature of himself, Tyler and Kit were almost unrecognizable, while the subplot of Charlotte's reunion with her brother was a non-starter. The confrontations were comical rather than dramatic, and the end of the mystery was unrealistic in the extreme. The author tried to throw all kinds of red herrings in but they do not replace a taut storyline nor well written suspense. The lack of passion in Charlotte's and Wrexford's relationship really showed, especially when she uncharacteristically flung herself at him several times. A pity! • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Buyer -- have enjoyed other books in this series, but not this one : Prior to this book, I found this series to be delightful. I found this one somewhat annoying and to be incongruent with values and dispositions of the characters from the previous books. Lady Charlotte seems to have lost her courage and tends to worry constantly, over scenarios she, in the past books, would have been mostly OK with. Her continuous worry was the annoying part of this book. I understand she was also worried about the bad guys, her family, and the wedding and giving up her freedom, and such, but it was just too much worry and negative introspection. Putting the weasels in danger didn't seem to fit either. And, the storyline was somewhat predictable and got so complicated in the end I didn't really care anymore and just sort of skimmed through it. Wrexford did not comes across very well in this book either. Not sure why but he wasn't very "likeable." So, in my opinion this book was not as well done as the previous ones in this series. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from SharHop3 -- Satisfying, like a good meal! : I am still smiling. I look forward to another installment of "Wrexford & Sloane" mystery. The interaction between characters is superb. Bravo Ms Penrose! ( Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon CustomerLAB -- Excellent read! : I have followed these characters from the beginning of their journey together. This wedding book finally ties the characters together to further deepen their relationship. The author as usual paints an accurate historical perspective of the Regency period and very skillfully weaves the plot into this background. I will look forward to reading the continued adventures of Lord and Lady Wexford and their associates. I recommend this series without hesitation to readers who enjoy mystery, romance and history. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Southerngirl -- Excellent : When I started with book 1 I was not sure what to expect from this series. I feel in love with the characters and there complexities. The plots are excellent and the atmosphere of the stories pulls the reader in. Give the series a try, I do not think you will be disappointed. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jay -- Excellent : A brilliant and devious plot that kept getting better and better. Lovely ending which was to be expected. Do hope there will be more stories in this great series. And now that I’ve finished it, I shall read it again to remind myself of anything I missed. Very well worth reading ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 1, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Doherty -- Bad spelling : A very good mystery and historical well done , only needed spelling corrections in some parts , I would read another , and found a lot of information I did not know, excellent ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 2, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Book Nut -- Not my favorite in the series but still great : The only reason I marked it down by one was that the mystery was way more convoluted than it needed to be. It was so confusing to keep some of the secondary characters and suspects straight, it slowed me down. Maybe that’s just me and not being clever enough to follow. Otherwise still a good book, with all the fun characters supporting the MCs back again. Great read. ( Reviewed in Canada on October 28, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from S. Ray -- Superb storyline.....as always : I have read this series from the beginning and have loved all the nuances, thought processes and unwinding of Charlotte's past and Wrexford's slow relaxing of his temper and strict empirical reasoning.
